I had a hard drive failing our DirecTiVo - freezing video, slow play, fast play, etc. The unit was well out of warranty, DirecTV suggested replacing the unit all together. I thought I would tinker with the TiVO a little to see if I could fix it before throwing it away and getting another. I first tried to fix the drive using SpinRite. SpinRite couldn't recover the failed portions of the drive. I did a little research into what to do and found very detailed instructions on how to do this in the Hinsdale howto. Even though Maxtor is not recommended by a lot of people, I grabbed an old 80GB Maxotr hardrive and copied the TiVo drive onto it, put it in the TiVo and it worked. Wow! I added 73 hours +/- to the TiVO!
